Design Formation at Langara College is a comprehensive applied instructional program that spans both 2D and 3D design disciplines. It includes foundational elements of graphic and communication design, interior and architectural design, and experiential design defined as communication design in built environments. This program emphasizes the core principles and techniques for effectively conveying ideas and information to business and consumer audiences.
The program welcomes creative learners of any age or background who wish to explore a breadth of visual arts disciplines. A project-based curriculum in a safe, supportive, and inclusive learning environment supports confidence, collaboration, curiosity, and a strong work ethic. In addition to developing essential skills in current and emerging computer-assisted technologies, students learn the fundamental elements and principles of design including form and shape in 2D and 3D applications, color theory, and typography.
Working in program studios, computer labs and workshops, students learn by creating portfolio ready projects, starting from concept development, sketching, imaging, and technical drawings to final fabrication and production essential for any professional studio work. These projects include a wide variety of media such as print, web, user experience design, exhibits, environmental graphics, interiors, and physical and virtual objects and spaces.
Students gain a diverse skill set that can be applied to entry level jobs in areas such as graphic design, retail display, interior spaces, exhibit design, or environmental graphic design. Furthermore, the program prepares individuals in various applied visual art media and provides a strong foundation for advanced studies in a wide variety of specialized programs in design.
Students graduate with a diploma, professional studio experience, industry awareness, and a professional portfolio.

Program option notes
A minimum "C" grade is required to progress through and graduate from the program in the following courses:
DSGN 1151, 1153, 1155, 1156, 1250, 1256, and 2151.A minimum "C" grade in the design area electives is required to progress through and graduate from the program. These courses include:
DSGN 1253, 2152, 2251, 2256, 2351, 2353, and 2451.The ENGL/CMNS, design history, design theory, and design area electives may be taken in semesters other than those presented. Students should contact the department for program advising.
Students who wish to transfer to another institution following completion of the diploma may wish to take additional coursework in order to facilitate transfer. Students in this situation are encouraged to contact the department chair of design formation for more information.
