Program requirements
Prior to registering, please be aware of the following:
- Attendance is mandatory as the program is intensive
- You will require a computer with a camera and microphone
- You must be able to commit your time to the whole program.

Registration
- Registration opens approximately 4 to 6 weeks prior to the program start date.
- This program is very competitive and seats are limited to 24. You are not required to submit an application to enroll in this program, however, please ensure that you have read the recommended prerequisites.

Other Information
- This program DOES NOT emphasize skills that may have been obtained elsewhere such as MS Word and Excel, keyboarding, practicums, first aid, and job search. Guidance is available should you wish to take additional training in these areas.
- Employers may have different hiring requirements. If seeking a specific job placement, before you register, first inquire with those particular employers as to what program(s) they will recognize for employment.
- Refunds: You must provide a minimum of 24 hours notice before the program begins to withdraw from once registered. Administrative fees will apply. There are NO refunds once the program has started.

If you are not able to meet the attendance requirements or the recommended prerequisites outlined on these pages, it may be difficult to receive a successful passing grade in this program.
Textbooks
There are 2 required textbooks in this program. Working in a Health Services Environment (digital or hard copy), and the Medical Transcript - custom version (digital), are available through the Langara Bookstore. Approximate cost for both is $150 before tax. Once you have your student number, these can be ordered through the Langara Bookstore site: https://mycampusstore.langara.bc.ca/ . Credential Eligibility
To qualify for the certification, students must complete 105 hours of coursework. Successful completion of all the required courses with a minimum B- grade in each course is required. All requirements must be completed within one year of starting the program. Students can complete the program as quickly as one semester. By exception and on a case-by-case analysis only, student may retake a module individually - as long as individual module prerequisites are met.

RECOMMENDED PREREQUISITES:
Please review the following recommended prerequisites.
Registrants in this program will be asked to acknowledge in writing that they have read and understood these recommendations prior to beginning the program. You will not be asked to provide proof of these recommended prerequisites, however you must be aware that if not properly prepared, your chances of success may be hindered.
- Fluency in written and spoken English: Strong English skills are required. Recommended: Grade 12 English or equivalent (CLB minimum 7 with 8 on Comprehension and/or IELTS minimum 6.5). Students who are weak in English skills should consider upgrading through an English as a Second Language Program or pursue an English for Academic Purposes course. These may be viewed on the Langara website under LEAP. You may also wish to prepare for this program by taking additional English classes, or Medical Terminology Level 1. If you are uncertain of your English level, please check with the LEAP program
- Typing speed of at least 35 wpm: You will not be tested on your typing skills, however to gain employment in the industry you will be expected to have a minimum of 45-50wpm. Additional training in keyboarding skills may be found at www.langara.ca/abc.
- Strong comprehension skills: As this program is delivered in an intensive format, students must be prepared to meet the expected rigors of this type of program. The program is fast-paced with frequent assignments and quizzes. Students must be able to work effectively and independently. Medical terminology is a large component of this program, so ensuring the ability to comprehend and apply this knowledge is a necessity.
- Computer skills: Although tasks will be assigned that require the use of a computer, this program does not provide instruction in word processing, spreadsheet or other computer programs. You should be able to easily navigate through a computer and use these programs to be successful in this program. If you require additional training in this area, the program coordinator can provide links to other educational training in this area. Please note these skills are required to obtain employment in this field.
