Students are expected to adhere to classroom and learning environment guidelines during their time at Langara College. You can read the full list of expectations here.

Find information on policies, rules, and regulations that impact your time at Langara. The office helps students gain greater insight into their decisions and behaviours so every student can learn in a safe, respectful environment. There are also examples of activities that are plagiarism and cheating.

It is good to know your Grade Point Average (GPA) and to understand how it is calculated. Your GP is assessed at the end of each semester on a 4-point scale. Good academic standing means that you have a GPA over 1.50 and you do not have more than one F, N, or U.

  • F = Fail (completed course work but did not meet the minimum expectation
  • N = Incomplete (did not attend class, complete course work, or write the final exam)
  • U = Unsatisfactory (did not pass a class)

Academic Probation

Regular Studies students on academic probation who do not achieve the minimum academic standard in their next semester will be placed on academic suspension.

Group Work

Group work is an assignment or project completed by three or more students collaborating and performing tasks together in order to fulfill course requirements. Most classes will require some form of group work: some group work may be required for a final presentation and project; other group work may be just to work together to discuss a topic or answer a question in class.

Benefits of group work include:

  • Increased individual achievement
  • Interpersonal and intercultural communications skill development
  • Enhanced teamwork skills leading to greater employment opportunities
  • Improved critical thinking and problem-solving skills
  • Strong connections created with other students

Although there are many benefits, many students fear group work, especially if they’ve never done it before. However, being prepared and knowing what to expect will help you overcome your fear.

FOUR TIPS FOR GROUP WORK:

Maintain regular group communication.

Communicating with Instructors

All instructors have office hours and are required to be in their offices for a certain amount of time every week to help students and provide extra support. This information is available on the course outline you receive in the first week of class. They are expecting to see students and welcome questions about their course so come prepared with specific questions to take advantage of this valuable time.

A few tips when communicating with instructors by email:

  • Include your full name, your student ID number, and the class you are in.
  • Formal email format and be as polite as possible.
  • Allow 3-5 days for a response.
  • Remember that your instructors have many students in their classes.

Langara Return to Learning Course (LRTL)

Are you currently on Academic Suspension? 
It can be very upsetting to be placed on academic suspension, we encourage you to view this experience as an opportunity to develop new approaches to your studies, which will help you be more successful in the future. Langara College has an Academic Standing policy that governs how your academic performance is assessed. The full academic policy is available from Registration & Records.

If this is your first time on academic suspension at Langara College, you are not permitted to register for three consecutive semesters. However, you may be eligible to appeal for early readmission if you choose to successfully complete Langara’s Return to Learning (LRTL) course option. Under this new option, early readmission is not guaranteed, and you will still be required to sit-out for a minimum of one semester while you complete the LRTL course.

Note: If this is not your first time on academic suspension, you are not eligible to appeal for early readmission based on the LRTL course option.

Completing this course is not mandatory, but is required if students wish to appeal for early readmission. Early readmission is granted to students who successfully complete the LTRL course with a minimum grade of 75%.

Langara’s Return to Learning (LRTL) Course

There are three steps to completing the LRTL course option for early readmission:

  1. Attend a LRTL information session.  You will be registered into the course after the completion of the information session.
  2. Log into Brightspace and complete the online course. You must achieve 75% on each module quiz in the course, in order to successfully complete the course.
  3. Attach your ‘completion badge’ (download from Brightspace, showing you have achieved the required score of 75%), and attach it to the Appeal for Early Readmission Form and submit to the Registrar’s Office.
Attend an Information Session

Information sessions are held each semester. When the schedule is confirmed, dates and registration information is posted on the Academic Success Centre website.
