The Indigenous Gathering Space, which opened its doors in 2010, is a supportive and welcoming multi-purpose space for Indigenous students to connect with one another and with student supports while at the College.

Space

The Indigenous Gathering Space includes various amenities such as a computer lab, kitchen, lounge area, and quiet study space. The area is designed for rest and relaxation should students need or want to escape from the bustling College halls. This space promotes quiet study and hosts programming for students to connect with friends, old and new.

Community

The Indigenous Gathering Space supports the on-campus Indigenous community with community-building events, such as our weekly Indigenous student luncheon, staff and faculty luncheons, and seasonal and holiday celebrations.

Culture

The Indigenous Gathering Space offers culturally grounded student supports and programming that is guided by Elders and Knowledge Holders. The space also features art from Musqueam artists Debra Sparrow, Kelly Cannell, Susan Point, and Thomas Cannell.

Elder in Residence

snəw̓eyəɬ leləm̓ is very fortunate to have an Elder-in-Residence program. Elders in Residence provide cultural support, guidance, and teachings to Indigenous students visiting the Gathering Space, including opportunities for engaging in cultural practice and ceremony. Students can visit with Elders Tuesday to Thursday from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm. College request for Elder support can be emailed to indigenous@langara.ca.

Student support

There are two Indigenous student services specialists and two Indigenous student counsellors who respond to the needs of students by encouraging their educational success and personal growth.

Indigenous counsellors offer personal, career, and educational counselling; students can meet with Indigenous counsellors in the Indigenous Gathering Space (C140) or in Counselling Services (B111). Virtual support via Zoom and phone is also available.

Special events

Indigenous activities and events happen throughout the year within the Indigenous Gathering Space and across campus. Events include:

  • National Indigenous Peoples Day
  • Annual Indigenous Graduation Celebration
  • National Day for Truth and Reconciliation
  • Women’s Memorial March
