Civic Reporting

Public institutions are the heartbeat of any community and the source of the most newsworthy stories. These institutions are accountable to the people they serve, and knowing how they work and where to find information is essential, even for non-journalists. In this course, students use social media, data visualization, multi-platform presentation and investigation to develop story proposals and communications strategies to cover a defined municipal beat. They also learn about the roles and responsibilities of local government agencies and how to engage with them to get results.

Priority registration in this course is offered to students admitted to the Diploma or Certificate in Journalism.

Prerequisite(s): A minimum "C-" grade in JOUR 1128.
