Frequently Asked Questions

How can I apply to the Professional Bookkeeper program?
No application is required, domestic students may start the program by directly registering for courses. The program is self-paced and students may take any number of courses each semester. The minimum program requirements must be completed within four years for the short-certificate credential.

For international students, see Admission requirements and application steps. Once admitted, student may then self-register for courses.

How can I register for courses in the program?
Course registrations are on a first come first serve basis. New and returning domestic students can call Continuing Studies at 604-323-5322 to register for courses. All returning students also have the option to self-register on Student Information System. See Registration page for more details.

When is the deadline to register for a course?
Students have up until the first day of class to register, given that space is available and you meet applicable course prerequisites requirements.

I work during the day, what time are the classes?
Delivery mode vary from course to course, if a course has scheduled live classes, they are generally in the weekday evenings from 6:30 PM to 9:30 PM, offering conveneince for those who work during the day. For specific schedule details of each course, please refer to the course schedule.

I would like to start the program, what courses should I take?
Students should start with courses that do not have required course prerequisites, such as ADMN 1021 (can be registered concurrently with ADMN 2001), BSAD 1029, and GBSC 1004.

Am I required to take a specific number of courses each semester?
Students can take any number of courses in a semester.

I work full-time, how many courses should I take?
Students who work full-time generally enroll in 1-2 full-semester course(s) in a term.

I have a vacation/personal travel planned, can I reschedule the final exam?
Students should not register for a course if there will be schedule conflicts with prior commitments. Midterm and final examinations must be completed on the scheduled dates. Failure to write on the scheduled dates will warrant a zero on the assessment. Exam deferral requests will be considered for extenuating circumstances with proper documentation and advanced notification to the instructor and program coordinator. Final approval is at the discretion of the program coordinator. There will be no exceptions, other than under exceptional and documented circumstances or for medical-related reasons.

Are there any grant or financial assistance for the programs?
This program is eligible for funding up to $3,500 from StrongerBC Future Skills Grant. Please visit our grant page for information about registration and application. Eligible students will have up to one year to complete the program using the grant.

An online course does not have date and time on the course schedule page, what does this mean?
We offer two types of online courses: asynchronous and synchronous. If the online course does not have date or time, then it is an asynchronous course, which means it does not have scheduled class time and course is mostly self-paced with scheduled dates for quizzes, assignments, exams, etc. Click here for more information on asynchronous vs. synchronous courses.

I live far from the Lower Mainland, is it possible to complete this program fully online?
It is possible to complete the entire Bookkeeper program online. Although all final exams are held in-person on Langara main campus, those who live outside of the Metro Vancouver region may use exam proctor instead of traveling to Langara. Please see the Proctored Exam page for more details and instructions.

I have completed equivalent education elsewhere before, can I transfer credits to the bookkeeping program?
Only the Business Communications (GBSC 1004) and Microsoft Office (BSAD 1029) courses are eligible for course exemption. The equivalent course work must be completed with minimum C+ (65%) within the last five years through a public post-secondary institution in Canada.

What is the difference between a Prerequisite Approval and a Course Exemption?
You can request a prerequisite approval if you need an override for the prerequisite requirement to register for a course. For example, ADMN 1021 is a required prerequisite in order to register for ADMN 2001, meaning that students must complete ADMN 1021 or equivalent with minimum C+ (65%) before registering for ADMN 2001. If student have completed a course that’s equivalent to ADMN 1021, then the student can request for prerequisite approval to register for ADMN 2001.

You can request a course exemption if you have completed the equivalent course at another public institution in Canada with minimum C+ (65%) within the last five years. Course exemption allows student to ‘bypass’ a required course toward the program credential. Only GBSC 1004 Business Communications and BSAD 1029 Microsoft Office are eligible for course exemptions in this program.

I have registered for a course, what textbook do I need to purchase and how can I find it?

Under 'campus term', please select the month term (ie. Sep-Dec 2024). You can also purchase textbooks in-person at our bookstore on campus.

Some online courses may also use Zoom, a free video conferencing software, to conduct live virtual class sessions. Students should ensure they have their student account information and access to Brightspace prior to the beginning of the course.

When does my course access start and end on Brightspace?
